Google Webmaster Tools Adds HTTPS Index Status Reporting

A s of March 9th, 2014, Google Webmaster Tools has improved reporting for your Web site's Index Status page by adding HTTPS sites along side the HTTP sites that were already shown. Google's Webmaster Tools Analyst, Zineb Ait Bahajji, was quoted:

"We hope to see more webmasters move their websites from HTTP to HTTPS in the future... In order to see your data correctly, you will need to verify all existing variants of your site (www., non-www., HTTPS, subdirectories, subdomains) in Google Webmaster Tools. We recommend that your preferred domains and canonical URLs are configured accordingly."

Yes, this is another move by Google to support secure sites and with Matt Cutts lobbying for a ranking boost for sites that go secure maybe it's time to add this task to your list. However, before you decide be sure to read our list of common drawbacks that come with switching to a secure site.
