To Interstitial or Not...Google Makes a Recommendation


Google had a hunch wondering if mobile app interstitials were a benefit to your site or if they were causing more harm than good. Well, after some major testing on their part their recommendation is official....Ditch them! App interstitials are the pop-up that prompts you to download a site's mobile app before letting you continue to content on their site. Google ran the numbers regarding the use of their own interstitials and they found that...

When using an interstitial:

  • Only 9% of users clicked the Get App button.
  • A whopping 69% of users simply abandoned the site.

When the interstitial was removed:

  • An increase of 17% in 1-day active users on their mobile site.
  • Installations for the G+ iOS app showed a very small decrease of 2% (most Android phones have G+ installed by default)

Google has gone on the record by saying these results mean they will do away with using app interstitials on their own products and they recommend that site owner's consider dropping them as well.
