YouTube's Keyword Tool Discontinued

We got a nasty surprise on September 1st, when we tried to visit YouTube's keyword tool and were tossed onto a 404 page with no explanation. It took awhile to confirm that the tool wasn't just down.

Google has since suggested that you use the Display Planner within the AdWords for video keyword suggestion needs.

And of course, in order to use Display Planner you'll need to signup for an AdWords account. Unfortunately, once you do have access to the tool you'll see that it's not quite as simple as YouTube's tool since it takes more than one step to get the results you're looking for.

  1. First you login to AdWords and find the Display Planner under the Tools tab.
  2. Enter your keywords and hit Get Ad Group Ideas.
  3. You'll then need to set a filter limiting it to only keywords for video and to see keywords under the Individual targeting ideas tab.

You can read Google's explanation of Display Planner here.
