Google is Now Indexing Flash!
Here's the key to designing high-ranking FLASH pages
Almost anyone who has built FLASH webpages can tell you that, historically, it's been all-too-challenging to get a Flash movie page ranking high in the search engines for one's selected keywords. That's because Flash inherently proffers little or no text for the engines to index. However, that was then and this is now and now, Google is indexing Flash!
Sit up and take heed. You are about to learn how you can (finally) optimize Flash pages to actually rank well in Google.
So far, it seems to be a little known secret...
Recently, while visiting with chat/forum moderator and ThemeMaster creator Michael Marshall, I discovered that Google has quietly begun indexing Flash. I also learned about a free program that allows us to peek behind the curtains to view approximately what Google's spider "sees" as content within Flash pages.
Of course, as discussions so often do, one thing led to another and my "visit" with Michael turned into an interview. I'll share with you the high points as we illustrate the process.
Question: Michael, how do you know that Google is now indexing the contents of Flash files? Is there a way that we can search the index just for Flash?
Michael Marshall: Yes, actually you can. You can enter your search term in Google and, along with that search term, use the filetype operator and restrict your search to the file extension .swf. This will return listings that are exclusively Macromedia Flash files. You should notice the [FLASH] designation posted alongside each Flash listing in the search results.
An example search would look like: "new cars" filetype:swf
