Google IPO coming soon to an online auction near you?
Google finally is announcing their long-awaited IPO scheduled for sometime in 2004. We've been expecting it – but what's really interesting is the method they're discussing for the initial IPO. Instead of the standard closed IPO that is usually only available to investment banks who give away shares at a reduced price to their cronies, Google is exploring the possibility of staging an online auction to distribute their shares to the highest bidders.
Such a thing has never been done before and though analysts are predicting that Google may be worth as much as $15bn there are those who fear that their market capitalization could go as high as $100bn should a frenzy ensue amongst a public hungry for shares of this already profitable dot.com trend setter.
