What other sitemap format besides XML does Google support?

  • In regards to the format of the XML sitemap for Google; I've been told the file doesn't need to be XML provided that it follows the correct protocol – http://www.example.com/ 2005-01-01 monthly 0.8 – Is this correct? ...and how important is the first line and the optional bits?

Answer:

Yes, Google supports sitemaps in multiple formats, including text, XML and RSS/Atom Feeds. You can get full information directly from Google by going here.

And yes, the first line with the encoding is required — the sitemap must be UTF-8 Encoded.
