How do I overcome geo-targeting and view Google US results in another country?

  • Can you please tell me how to view the Google search results for the US when outside of the country? I live in New Zealand and I'd like to have only US search results permanently show up on this PC (but not other PCs on my home network). If this is possible, how do I do it and is there any reason why I should not?

flags.jpgAnswer: In your case, since you are located in New Zealand, Google reads your IP address and redirects any attempt by you to reach Google.com to your appropriate country-specific Google index at Google.co.nz. The same goes for users searching for Google in the UK (redirected to Google.co.uk) or those searching from Mexico (redirected to Google.com.mx), among dozens of other countries.

The reasoning behind this is clear: Google knows that the vast majority of people within a particular country want to be directed to a Google site that is themed to their specific location and language. Users in France and Germany for example prefer to be redirected to their language specific sites located at Google.fe and Google.de respectively.

The good news is that there is a very easy URL modifier that you can affix to the end of your Google browser URLs which will pull up Google results from whatever country you desire.
