looking to purchase a domain that has been activated for the past 5 years but redirected to another site. Is there any chance that Google will penalize, ignore or otherwise handicap this domain name due to the fact it was redirected to another website in the past?

It's probably fine, assuming it's been redirecting to a reasonable destination.

John followed up saying that anything that isn't pure spam or an adult site is "probably ok." Our advice is to avoid buying any domain name that has been subjected to Google's SafeSearch adult filter.
