Why are Facebook videos on YouTube showing up in search results for brand name searches?
-
I'm wondering if you might know why I'm seeing videos in the search results for a brand name search that are from Facebook, not YouTube.
The videos ARE on YouTube, but it's pulling Facebook videos. The strange thing is the search result pages' thumbnails are from some unrelated non-brand videos.
I've checked three competitors and everyone else shows the correct YouTube videos/thumbnails for their Brand search result pages.
Am I just slow to notice a bug or is this a thing caused by something else?
Answer:
Google has recently been ranking videos from sources other than YouTube. Now they are treating them more like images where the page the video is embedded on is more important than who is hosting it. This is good for developers as it reduces YouTube's stranglehold on video related traffic a bit.
For example, doing a search for dean marinis 5.57, we found Facebook listed in three of eight of the carousel spots. This indicates a shift because, in the past, we would only see YouTube results.
As to why the thumbnails aren't correct for the Facebook videos. It could have been caused by a bug at Facebook when Google spidered those pages. Although, we really can't be sure.
