Bing Launches Action Buttons and Something Isn't Right...


In a move to counter Google's new huge sitelink listings, Bing has introduced Action Buttons to their search results. Action Buttons are large links to the right of search listings that lead to the top actions for those sites.

As of right now, these Action Buttons are limited to sites in just 7 categories which include:

  • Airlines,
  • Couriers (FedEx/UPS/USPS),
  • Restaurants,
  • Banks,
  • Rental Cars,
  • Software Downloads
  • and Hotels.

Bing is reportedly using an algorithm to determine the top actions (clicks) people are taking on sites, however the options really appear to be manually chosen.

In the screen shot above, we searched for Adobe Reader, the URL shown in the search results is get.adobe.com/reader/, with the Downloads Action Button URL going to http://get.adobe.com/reader/download/ - but that URL is a 301 redirect to http://get.adobe.com/reader.

If it was a bot that configured that Action Button, the get.adobe.com/reader URL should have been returned. In other words, something fishy is going on at least with the Adobe Example.

We also discovered Bing is still testing Action Buttons at least with a certain subset of users, while grabbing screenshots for this article, we observed the variation below, in combination with zero ads, and no left menu, quite likely a bug of some sort.
