Google Adds Expandable Sitelinks to Mobile

Google's mobile search results appear to have a new feature: expandable sitelinks. These sitelinks are now expandable, so you can navigate deeper into a site without actually visiting the site.

Unfortunately, sitelinks are not something you have a lot of control over. We'd love to give you a step by step guide on how to get these links showing in the search results but we can't. As Google says here:

"We only show sitelinks for results when we think they'll be useful to the user. If the structure of your site doesn't allow our algorithms to find good sitelinks, or we don't think that the sitelinks for your site are relevant for the user's query, we won't show them."

To put it simply, Google puts sitelinks onto a site's popular pages so that users can land directly onto those pages. So if you aren't triggering sitelinks to your top pages then you're going to have to work on building up the authority of those pages. However, if on the other hand you're getting sitelinks you don't want then you can demote them within Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools). Here's how to do so within Search Console:

Demote a sitelink URL:

  1. Under Search Appearance, click Sitelinks.
  2. Follow the steps for the URL you don't want a sitelink to appear.
  3. In the Demote this sitelink box, put in the URL of the sitelink you want to demote.
  4. And you're done. Just be patient for Google to make this change happen as it can take some time.
