Introducing Google's New 'Rich Result' Testing Tool


Google has released a new Rich Result Testing Tool that is designed to show if your website is marked up with the proper Structured Data code to be eligible for a 'Rich Result', which is any type of enhanced search feature as described here. However, before you get too excited, this tool is currently only working for markup on recipes, jobs, movies and courses with more types promised to be added soon.

To use the tool you just enter the URL of the page you'd like to test and hit enter, which will give you results like the screenshot below.

Unfortunately, this is a page by page process just like Google's Structured Data Testing Tool. The only location that will give you site-wide data on Structured Data is the reporting in Google Search Console, which takes a long time to get updated to any changes you've made on your site. Regardless, this new tool does linked to those reports as shown in the screenshot above.

This tool has been designed to allow you to focus just on the Structured Data types that will currently result in a rich result. This is how Google described their new tool:

We're introducing a new rich results testing tool to make diagnosing your pages' structured data easier. The new testing tool focuses on the structured data types that are eligible to be shown as rich results. It allows you to test all data sources on your pages, such as JSON-LD (which we recommend), Microdata, or RDFa. The new tool provides a more accurate reflection of the page’s appearance on Search and includes improved handling for Structured Data found on dynamically loaded content.
