Yahoo Image & Video Search Updated with Freshness in Mind


After all the management shakeup last month at Yahoo, it's good to see they are continuing to work on the search engine and not frozen in place. Yahoo released new additions to their Image Search results pages and partnered with Getty Images to add 20,000 high quality images every day to their image search. Yahoo stated that they're committed to freshness in image search, especially for news related events.

It is a very clean interface, and search options are hidden to the left with a little Arrow Tab. It actually reminds us a bit of the changes that Bing made to their image search this month as well. Like Bing, it's now more responsive, works better for tablets and includes thumbnail hovering. However, that's where the similarities end. Yahoo doesn't group duplicate images all under one thumbnail. Instead it chooses what it believes to be the best one of many and you just don't get to see all the copies.

Now if you click on one of the images in the search results, you have the option to watch a slide show of the results, which is unique. You can also choose to make the images full screen. It's clear that Yahoo is working to make their interface work better with tablets and that's likely what this change is mostly targeted at.

Video search was also updated, users can now see autoplay thumbnails when they hover over the video thumbnails. With the new HTML5 design, Video search results have a full screen viewing option as well but only if the video source allows it. For example, YouTube lets Yahoo embed their videos, but Vimeo doesn't so you have to go to their site to watch.

Yahoo also released a High Quality (HQ) Badge and a Latest filter that are available in the left rail options. The HQ badge filter requires images to be at least 2 megapixels and 1024x768 aspe...
