SEN Forum Top Pick: Newbie needs direction/checklist to rank for tough keyword

New at this, I am seeking direction for a checklist or article to give me ideas on how to rank for a few very competitive keywords. I write all my own content, am a consumer bankruptcy attorney, and while i am on page one for several good keywords, my goal is to get to number 1 or 2. I am willing to invest whatever it takes. Could I ask the forum to point me to some resources to study for this?

Thank you!

Next, ranking for specific competitive keywords means understanding what your competitors are doing and emulating the good and improving on the bad. So if you haven't done a competitive analysis of the top three ranking sites right now in Google for those top target pages, that should also be on your action list item.
