Facebook Moving UK Users to US Privacy Terms & Conditions

Facebook is opportunistically using Brexit to switch UK users away from the EU privacy regime, the world's strictest, to the more lenient user agreement the social network uses in California, USA. The change will take place when the country parts way with the EU next year.

This means that UK users will enjoy fewer privacy protections once they've fully left the EU.

According to Reuters, a Facebook spokesman from the company’s UK arm said,

Like other companies, Facebook has had to make changes to respond to Brexit and will be transferring legal responsibilities and obligations for UK users from Facebook Ireland to Facebook Inc. There will be no change to the privacy controls or the services Facebook offers to people in the UK

Although the strict privacy regulations of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will still apply in the UK at least for a while, privacy experts are concerned that might not last over the long run – dealing yet another blow to users' privacy in the UK.

  • Actionable Strategy — If you're in the UK, look for Facebook to inform you of the shift in the next six months whereupon you'll be given the option to stop using Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp services.SEN article end
