Facebook Q&A Live with Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg gave his first live Q&A with Facebook users in attendance. He said that they have a Q&A in-house with employees on a regular basis but wanted to give their audience an opportunity to ask him whatever they wanted. They collected questions from Facebook and those with the highest number of likes were chosen with some question askers even flying out to be in attendance at the conference. While some of the questions were not of much relevance to online marketers there were some key points that he shared worth noting particularly when it comes to organic reach.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that some businesses are seeing a marked reduction in their organic reach from their fan pages and the reasons are two-fold. First, users are posting more than ever. He stated that each person could potentially view 1500 stories from their friends each day but only about 10% of those end up reaching their newsfeeds.

Second, Facebook's algorithm attempts to personalize the newsfeed for each user, meaning the user's preferences and not the poster's are what's taken into account. Businesses seeing an increase in organic reach are doing so because they continue to offer quality content that is relevant for their audience. Zuckerberg also noted that Facebook intends to improve the user's ability to edit what's shown in their newsfeeds even more in the coming year. This makes producing quality desirable content on Facebook even more important if you want to your Fan pages to remain relevant.
