On May 9th, YouTube rolled out a beta launch of their paid membership service, which currently includes 54 premium channels. Memberships to these channels all begin with a 14-day free trial, boast an ad free environment and have low membership fees. This shift to a paid service also explains why YouTube recently revamped their user interface to specifically focus on the promotion and organization of channels.

"Starting today, we're launching a pilot program for a small group of partners that will offer paid channels on YouTube with subscription fees starting at $0.99 per month."
