Considering a ccTLD? Not so Fast! Do Your Research First


Deciding on a relevant keyword rich domain for a new site can be tricky because there is a lot of competition for the most common TLDs. A user asked Matt Cutts whether using a ccTLD for a domain is a viable strategy even if you're not targeting that specific geographic region. His response was that if the ccTLD is specific to a region, it's best not to try and manipulate that ccTLDs intent. That ccTLD is selected for geographic targeting and your rankings could suffer for it.

Matt also went on to mention that there are a number of ccTLDs which are now considered generic and that you should investigate before making any decisions on which domain to choose. You can find the full list of those generic ccTLDs here.
