Google Publishes an AMP for Ecommerce Guide


Accelerated mobile pages (AMP) have become Google's buzz phase for 2016. However, like many things Google pushes onto website owners there is a lot of confusion and questions involved. To reduce some of that we've published a quick guide to AMP titled, How To Get Started With Accelerated Mobile Pages Now. Google is also doing their part to educate the masses with their dedicated website https://www.ampproject.org/ and their just released AMP guide for ecommerce websites titled GETTING STARTED WITH AMP FOR E-COMMERCE. Google introduced the importance of the AMP for ecommerce guide like this:

Through the extraordinary progress and open-source collaboration to date, we have built AMP to be great at handling news and blogs, but it’s also now suitable to build many aspects of an e-commerce site. AMP is a natural fit for e-commerce because AMP makes web pages fast, and fast pages help with purchase conversions.

The entire guide is designed in a way that allows you to walk through a customer's journey from landing on your website to purchasing an item. It's a simple six step process that includes:

  • STEP 1: Browsing

  • STEP 2: Landing on a product page

  • STEP 3: Exploring related products

  • STEP 4: Personalizing and understanding

  • STEP 5: Supporting purchase

  • STEP 6: Keep caching in mind

This type of AMP adoption onto your website is not something you will be able to accomplish with a plugin like we discussed in our article. This is going to take a full commitment to hand code your pages to be AMP compatible. Yes, a fast site helps your conversions but you need to decide if AMP adoption on that level is worth the commitment to getting everything coded error free right now. Plugins have not been able to keep up with the changes Google is rolling out but they eventually will.
