Small Tweaks Done to Bing Maps

Bing Maps received a handful of new updates March 14th according to the Bing Search Blog. The changes were not major ones, mostly aimed towards better usability of Maps on desktop computers.

Push Pins, Icons and Pop Ups Enhanced

Bing New Map Pins

  • Bing switched over to Circles from Push Pins graphics that previously noted locations on their map. The new circles change color based on the locations status, such as when you mouse over one, it changes from Blue to Black, and the associated listing in the left column changes as well.
  • An info box with the location name pops up as well when you hover over that circle. Then if you click the numbered circle, the box expands with more information about that location - similar to our screen shot above. The info box lists business name, address, phone, sharing functions, directions and more. If you save a location, the color for the circle changes to orange.

Of course, if you're using the mobile version of Bing, or their App, you won't see these updates as the interface doesn't work the same. Nor did they bother to update it. As mentioned before - when are Bing's users most likely to use a Map? Hello Bing - are you listening? It appears Bing just can't get this Mobile first strategy.

Routing Update

Bing New Route OptionsJust to prove we're fair with Bing, they did make an update that works far better than before. That's the route modification option which used to be a bit buggy and slow to respond.

Now when you are using directions in Bing Maps, you can drag the little green circles to modify your route easily. We do have to give thumbs up to Bing, this does work a lot better than before, on the Desktop.

We won't go in to how this works on mobile, again, you get the picture...
