Still using dofollow Links in Your Widget?! Be Warned


Google has issued a warning to anyone who has dofollow links within a widget. As you know, widgets can be very useful in creating an engaging user experience. However, when those widgets aid in the manipulation of PageRank (dofollow links) then it's considered a violation of the Google Webmaster Guidelines.

With any type of official warning against a guideline violation like this, Google will be quick to take action against anyone not listening. So, if you have a widget and those dofollow links have worked up until now then here is your warning. You have two choices:

  1. You can remove the followed link from the widget entirely.

  2. Be sure that the unnatural link doesn't pass PageRank by adding rel=”nofollow” attribute to it.

Whatever you decide to do - do it quickly. Once you've stopped those links for counting toward your page's authority then you're going to have to replace those links with ones that don't violate Google's guidelines. Here are some to help you do that.
