Takes a Solid Google+ Profile to Rank on New Google Maps Interface

The release of a completely redesigned Google Maps user interface has many businesses in a panic. This new interface has completely removed the directory-type list of ranking businesses that we are so used to and replaced it with an interactive map. The new interactive display requires a more hands on approach by users and promises to become more *personalized* with every search.

This promise of personalization is what is most concerning as users can now sort results by: Top Reviewers, Google+ social circles or Top results. This immediately brings reviews (good and bad) as well as Google+ interaction into a much more spotlighted position. The businesses that users have +1'd, left a review for, or perhaps are connected with someone who has had interaction with the company will get more exposure to those users. As more users are pushed into the Google+ interface the more important it is that you're sure your business' Google+ page is active with correct information such as hours, photos, recent posts - as well as building up those vital customer reviews.

The changes this new interface brings to the table have effectively leveled the playing field within local search as it's suddenly less important to rank at the top organically and MORE important that your G+ profile is as strong as it can be. This is yet another very aggressive way for Google to force businesses and users alike onto Google+.

For now, the new interface is by invite only so you have some time to build out your Google+ business profile. Keep an eye on what's going on over the next few months, especially on the way the new Maps are continually personalized as you use them. We've noticed that the interface is incredibly slow and lagging when it comes to most actions. It seems that this interface still has some bugs to work out. We plan to pull apart and publish the top actions you'll need to take to secure as much exposure as possible within the new Google Maps interface. Look for a complete featured article from us in the coming months.

Request your invitation to get the new Maps here. Then take some time to poke around and see how this might affect you and your clients.
