What, exactly, is Core Web Vitals?

  • I'm hearing a lot about Core Web Vitals these days in relation to SEO but, at the risk of sounding dumb, I have to ask, what exactly is Core Web Vitals and what, if any, impact do they have on ranking?

Answer:

Actually not such a "dumb" question. There's a fair amount of confusion surrounding the topic so clarification is indeed in order.

Core Web Vitals is Google's measurement of the quality of a user's experience on a website based on the following three metrics.

  1. Largest Contentful Paint – which measures how quickly users see content.
  2. First Input Delay which measures how responsive a site is to user input like tapping a button or entering data in a form.
  3. Cumulative Layout Shift which measures how often elements of the page move around while the user is trying to read or interact with it.

As to having an impact on rankings, Google says...

Starting May 2021, Core Web vitals will be included in page experience signals together with existing search signals including mobile-friendliness, safe-browsing, HTTPS-security, and intrusive interstitial guidelines.
