Does Google treat .info and .tv domains differently then .com domains?

  • I have a .info domain which has never done very well in Google. Does Google give preference to .com domains in comparison to .info or .tv domains in their rankings? If so, how can I combat this with my site?

Answer: You can file this question under SEO myths. Google's algorithm does not give preference to one domain class over another nor does it give preference to links coming from .info domains as opposed to a similar link coming from a more common .com domain. To Google, domains and links are judged on their content and backlinks, not their TLD. The only exception here is links from .edu and .gov sites which search engines tend to grant more authority and trust.

If you have a high quality .info site which you have designed, built, and marketed with the user in mind your site is probably doing fine. We have seen examples where the content is overall thin and have some usability issues with the site design. These factors could easily be impacting how a site is ranking in Google. Further, as with any site, you need to pay particular attention to your backlink profile. Your online effectiveness will be limited by a low number of quality incoming links. These problems would present ranking difficulties regardless of your domain (com, Info or .tv).

To show how successful .info AND .tv domains can be online, take a look at these current Google examples for various popular keywords:
